Case 1:
Grant $3183.63. Thirty year old female National Guardsman
from Missouri. Single mother with four children. Deployed to
Iraq, September 2005 – June 2006. Upon
return to States was diagnosed with thyroid cancer for which
she is being treated at the VA. She cannot hold a job
because of the effects of cancer treatment. Grant was for
rent Nov-March $2000, auto insurance $320.00, car payment
$290.20, past due phone bill $534.43.
Case 2:
Grant $6,479.99. Thirty year-old Army Captain from New
York. Had spent 17 years in the Army when
he was injured in Iraq. Served two tours in Iraq. Was
seriously wounded twice. Received two Bronze Stars and
Commendation for Valor. He suffers from TBI, PTSD,
considerable fatigue, and numbness in his feet. He
continues to be treated at the Brooklyn VA Hospital.
Reserve Aid paid $3816.68 on credit card he has been using
for survival, $2300 for February and March rent, and $363.21
for his past-due cell phone bill.
Case 3:
Grant $9086.60. Twenty-four year-old
soldier from Texas. Has a wife and two children. Was
severely injured in IED blast in 2003. Has severe TBI,
heart condition (which will require heart surgery in the
future) and PTSD. Is 100% unemployable. Is receiving
treatment at the Dallas VA. Reserve Aid paid $1349.68 for
his insurance and $7,736.32 to purchase a car for him, so
his wife can drive him to his VA appointments, which is 85
miles from his home.
Case 4: Grant: $3680.79. Female E-4
National Guardsman from
Missouri. Married with three children. Served in Iraq from
November 2005 to November 2006. Developed severe headaches
while in Iraq. Upon return home, was diagnosed with brain
lesions. She is currently paralyzed and cannot speak. She
is not expected to survive. Reserve Aid paid $2696.93 for
mortgage to prevent foreclosure, $334.58 for heating bill,
$360.64 for auto insurance,
Case 5: Grant: $5281.17. Twenty-four year-old
Marine Corporal. Married with one child. Has severe PTSD
and was hospitalized for 18 months for this condition. In
addition, suffers from severe depression. Reserve Aid paid
$204 for a previous student loan, $2401 for a credit card
they had been using for survival, $588 for another credit
card, $784.86 for another credit card, $305.40 for their
auto insurance, $672.23 for a personal loan, $1664.00 for
propane for heat (they had been without heat for two weeks),
and $325 for his text books. Since working with Reserve
Aid, his mental condition has greatly improved. This is the
result of not having to worry about the huge debt he had
accumulated. He has enrolled in Junior College and is doing
well.
Case 6: Grant $5504. Female soldier, 33 years old
from Louisiana. Has five children and husband is in prison
serving life sentence. Was deployed to Iraq when Katrina
hit New Orleans. Service member returned home to find that
she had lost everything. She has been struggling for the
past three years to rebuild her life. Reserve Aid provided
$1500 Wal-Mart card for food and clothing, $3535 for used
van, and $479 for one year of auto insurance.
Case 7: Grant $2280. Forty year-old Marine Reserve
Gunnery Sergeant from Kentucky. Married with three
children. Was severely injured by IED blast while in Iraq.
Incurred eye and leg injury and is totally deaf in left ear
and suffers from PTSD. Family was evicted from apartment on
8 Jan 08 due to non-payment of rent. Service member is now
receiving compensation from the VA. Reserve Aid paid $750
for one month rent in new apartment, $494.43 for past-due
gas bill, $536.00 for past-due bill on storage facility,
$500 Wal-Mart card for food and gas.
